Does friendship lasts forever? Is friendship everlasting?

The answer depends on what kind of friendship it is. There are friendships that will perish on time, but there are also friendships that will last forever. Friendship is a relationship commonly exists among humans. However, one can also have friendship with God or have friendship with the devil. Likewise, we can also befriend the desires of the flesh (i.e., greed, envy, lust, adultery, and other earthly things) or we can also befriend the works of the spirits (i.e., love, peace, joy and other fruits of the spirits).

In making friends with people, the Holy Scriptures, which are the breath of God, have given us instructions not to have friendship with certain kind of people, for these kind of friendship will not bear eternity – but will only cause us failure and destruction.

God don’t want to us to make friends with hot-tempered persons, who are easily angered, for they will only influence us such bad character which will eventually give us a lot of problems. Such friendship will lead us to sin, will be judged and will not last forever.

Proverbs 22:24 (NIV)
Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man,
do not associate with one easily angered,
or you may learn his ways
and get yourself ensnared.

He has warned us to avoid bad companions, for they will corrupt even the good characters of a good person.

1 Corinthians 15:33 (NIV)
Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

The Lord does not want us to befriend with the world or the desires of the flesh, for they will make us disloyal and an enemy to Him. Such friendship will also lead us to sin and will not last forever.

James 4:4 (NIV)
You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

One friendship that is everlasting is the friendship that comes from God. One example is the friendship between God and His faithful servant Abraham. God still honored His friendship with Abraham, even up to his descendants.

James 2:23 (NIV)
And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend.

Isaiah 41:8 (NIV)
“But you, O Israel, my servant,
Jacob, whom I have chosen,
you descendants of Abraham my friend,

God’s friendship blesses us.

Job 29:4 (NIV)
Oh, for the days when I was in my prime,
when God’s intimate friendship blessed my house,

Now, if we are looking for an everlasting friendship with people, the Bible has also given us guidelines. We should find them to those people, and we must also find them in ourselves. We must remember that an everlasting friendship consists of everlasting friends. Even if we will find a good friend, if we will not become a good friend to them – a good and everlasting friendship will not exist.

A good friend is one that will love you always. If we are to love our enemy, how much more we ought to love our friends?

Proverbs 17:17 (NIV)
A friend loves at all times,
and a brother is born for adversity.

A good friend is one that has a pure heart and whose speech is gracious.

Proverbs 22:11 (NIV)
He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious
will have the king for his friend.

Conclusion:
When in friendship, God is present, that friendship will last forever. When you make friends with the ones who are from God and the fruits of the Spirit of God (love, peace, joy, gentleness, faithfulness, patience, kindness and self-control) is in you – you will have an everlasting friendship.
