Shame is shameful and we don’t like it to happen to us. To avoid it, the Holy Scriptures guide us how. The following are what the Bible tells about preventing shame and disgrace:
Trust in God. Believe in Him and be in His side.
For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
They cried to You, and were delivered;
They trusted in You, and were not ashamed
O my God, I trust in You;
Let me not be ashamed;
Let not my enemies triumph over me.
Keep my soul, and deliver me;
Let me not be ashamed, for I put my trust in You.
Uphold me according to Your word, that I may live;
And do not let me be ashamed of my hope.
Keep and obey God’s commandments.
Then I would not be ashamed,
When I look into all Your commandments.
I cling to Your testimonies;
O LORD, do not put me to shame!
Let my heart be blameless regarding Your statutes,
That I may not be ashamed.
1 John 2:28
And now, little children, abide in Him, that when[a] He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.
Don’t be foolish and wicked, instead be wise and righteous.
A righteous man hates lying,
But a wicked man is loathsome and comes to shame.
The wise shall inherit glory,
But shame shall be the legacy of fools.
Do not let me be ashamed, O LORD, for I have called upon You;
Let the wicked be ashamed;
Let them be silent in the grave.
Don’t talk lies and nonsense. Instead speak truth and pure wisdom.
“ Should not the multitude of words be answered?
And should a man full of talk be vindicated?
Should your empty talk make men hold their peace?
And when you mock, should no one rebuke you?
How long, O you sons of men,
Will you turn my glory to shame?
How long will you love worthlessness
And seek falsehood? Selah
sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.
Don’t hate your neighbors, rather love your neighbors.
Those who hate you will be clothed with shame,
And the dwelling place of the wicked will come to nothing.”
But You have saved us from our enemies,
And have put to shame those who hated us.
Hear the word of the LORD, You who tremble at His word: “ Your brethren who hated you, Who cast you out for My name’s sake, said, ‘ Let the LORD be glorified, That we may see your joy.’ But they shall be ashamed.”
Don’t be proud and arrogant.
Let the proud be ashamed,
For they treated me wrongfully with falsehood;
But I will meditate on Your precepts.
Do not oppose the people of God
Let them be confounded and consumed
Who are adversaries of my life;
Let them be covered with reproach and dishonor
Who seek my hurt.
Do not be abusive.
He who mistreats his father and chases away his mother
Is a son who causes shame and brings reproach.
Do not be lazy.
He who gathers in summer is a wise son;
He who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame.
Do not marry a woman who brings shame.
An excellent wife is the crown of her husband,
But she who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones.
Listen before answering.
He who answers a matter before he hears it,
It is folly and shame to him.
Avoid drunkenness and sexual immorality.
Their drink is rebellion,
They commit harlotry continually.
Her rulers dearly love dishonor.
Do not worship the wrong gods. Avoid idolatry.
Those who make an image, all of them are useless,
And their precious things shall not profit;
They are their own witnesses;
They neither see nor know, that they may be ashamed.
Let all be put to shame who serve carved images,
Who boast of idols.
Worship Him, all you gods.
They shall be turned back,
They shall be greatly ashamed,
Who trust in carved images,
Who say to the molded images,
‘ You are our gods.’
Everyone is dull-hearted, without knowledge;
Every metalsmith is put to shame by an image;
For his molded image is falsehood,
And there is no breath in them.
