Church or temple?

What is a church? What does a church means? Does it mean a beautiful building? Isn’t it a majestic temple? Or it is an assembly of people? Let us simply, directly and deeply answers those questions.

According to the Gospel, a Church is the body of Christ.

Colossians 1:18 (NKJV)
And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

Colossians 1:24 (NKJV)
I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church,

The church is composed of its members – the people who are united in one Spirit and in Christ Jesus.

1 Corinthians 12:12-13 (NKJV)
For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:27 (NKJV)
Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

The head of the church is Christ, whom is also its savior.

Ephesians 5:23 (NKJV)
For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.

Christ loved the church and gave himself for it.

Ephesians 5:25 (NKJV)
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,

He nourishes and cherishes it.

Ephesians 5:29 (NKJV)
For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.

A church, which is the body of Christ, is composed of persons. The following passage will show you that the church lives in their house.

Romans 16:5 (NKJV)
Likewise greet the church that is in their house.
Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia to Christ.

Acts 8:3 (NKJV)
As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house, and dragging off men and women, committing them to prison.

This church can be gathered together.

Acts 14:27 (NKJV)
Now when they had come and gathered the church together, they reported all that God had done with them, and that He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

1 Corinthians 11:18 (NKJV)
For first of all, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it.

Acts 14:27 (NKJV)
Now when they had come and gathered the church together, they reported all that God had done with them, and that He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

The Church of God, was established though Christ’s sacrifice with His own blood.

Acts 20:28 (NKJV)
Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God[a] which He purchased with His own blood.

The church is built on a strong foundation, that even the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Matthew 16:18 (NKJV)
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

The church can be built up through preaching and proclaiming the words of God.

1 Corinthians 14:5 (NKJV)
I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

1 Corinthians 14:12 (NKJV)
Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.

It will continue to increase in numbers through the fear of the Lord and the encouragement of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 9:31 (NKJV)
Then the churches[a] throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.

Conclusion:
The Church of God is not a beautiful and majestic temple or house built by human hands. It is not even just an assembly of people gathered together in one place. It is not just a physical assembly of people. It is a spiritual assembly. Remember that church is the body of Christ, and the head of that body is Christ. The true church of God is a complete body composed of people who are united in the Spirit of God and Christ which is the head of that body. Now you may ask the elders of your church with this question – who is the head of our church? If they will answer a different one – be alarmed. If they will answer that it is Christ who is the head of our church, make this one a follow-up question – are we following all the teachings of Christ, which are written in the Bible? You are blessed if the elders of your church knows what are those teachings which are written in the Bible.

  • Note and Disclaimer: We usually use the New International Version (NIV) and New King James Version (NKJV) versions of the Bible. However, we also recommend our readers to do their own research and use other reliable translations, for them, to be able to discern what is fully accurate and truthful from what is not.

Are you a member of Iglesia ni Kristo? They wrote “church of Christ” as “Church of Christ”, giving emphasis to their church, making Christ an inferior.

    Hi Dennis,
Thank you for visiting our site.
I am not a member of INC. I think that their doctrine tells that Christ is not a God.
