What is the Purpose of Life on Earth?
What is the purpose of our life on Earth?
The purpose of man’s life on Earth is to fear God and keep His commandments.
Ecclesiastes 12:13 (NIV)
Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the whole duty of man.
But why to fear God and keep His commandments?
It is because the fear of the Lord is wisdom and to keep His commandments is understanding.
Job 28:28 (NIV)
And he said to man,
‘The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom,
and to shun evil is understanding.’ “
Psalm 111:10 (NIV)
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom;
all who follow his precepts have good understanding.
To him belongs eternal praise.
But why should we need to have wisdom and understanding?
It’s because wisdom gives us straight paths to eternal life. And understanding gives us the knowledge of God and keeps us away from evil which leads to eternal punishment.
1 Corinthians 1:30 (NIV)
It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
Proverbs 4:5-19 (NIV)
Get wisdom, get understanding;
do not forget my words or swerve from them.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;
love her, and she will watch over you.
Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
Esteem her, and she will exalt you;
embrace her, and she will honor you.
She will set a garland of grace on your head
and present you with a crown of splendor.”
Listen, my son, accept what I say,
and the years of your life will be many.
I guide you in the way of wisdom
and lead you along straight paths.
When you walk, your steps will not be hampered;
when you run, you will not stumble.
Hold on to instruction, do not let it go;
guard it well, for it is your life.
Do not set foot on the path of the wicked
or walk in the way of evil men.
Avoid it, do not travel on it;
turn from it and go on your way.
For they cannot sleep till they do evil;
they are robbed of slumber till they make someone fall.
They eat the bread of wickedness
and drink the wine of violence.
The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn,
shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness;
they do not know what makes them stumble.
1 John 5:20 (NIV)
We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
But why should we care of all these things: the fear of the Lord, wisdom, understanding, evil, death, salvation and eternal life?
It’s because God will judge us in the day of the Judgment.
Ecclesiastes 12:14 (NIV)
For God will bring every deed into judgment,
including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil.
But how can we have confidence on the day of the Judgment?
If we accept the love of God and we live in love, we will have the confidence on the Day of Judgment.
1 John 4:16-17 (NIV)
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him.
